Phosphorus is one of the three main nutrients of life, along with nitrogen and carbon. Total phosphorus is a measure of all forms of phosphorus, both organic and inorganic. Phosphorus is essential to the growth of organisms and it is often the nutrient that limits primary productivity in surface waters. High phosphorus levels are often associated with wastewater discharges and nonpoint source pollution from septic systems and erosion. An abundance of phosphorus spurs the growth of plants and algae. The EPA recommended naximum level for total phosphorus in surface waters is 0.1 mg/L. The following graphs present county-wide trends in total phosphorus for each year that data were collected. High olor values may exceed the maximum shown on the legend.
