Bacteria occur natural in water, air and soil. However, some bacteria are associated with water borne pathogens and wastewater pollution. Fecal coliform bacteria are often used as an indicator of the presence of other pathogens in surface water. The recommended maximum for fecal coliform bacteria in recreational waters is 200 colonies/100 mL of water. The following graphs present county-wide trends in fecal bacteria concentrations for each year that data were collected. High color values may exceed the maximum shown on the legend.
