150 to 200 high school students from Clinton, Essex, Franklin, and St. Lawrence Counties converge on Paul Smith's College Wednesday early each May to compete in the Annual North Adirondack Regional Envirothon. The Envirothon tests the student's knowledge on topics such as soils, water resources, forestry, wildlife and current environmental issues. Up to 25 teams of students from high schools around the region compete for the chance to represent their school and county at the state level, and for bragging rights and trophy as the overall North Adirondack Regional Envirothon winner. Winning teams from each county advance to the New York State Envirothon. State competition winners will represent New York at the Canon International Envirothon.

The Envirothon began in Pennsylvania in the spring of 1979. New York held its first Envirothon in 1990 with three participating counties. In 1991, several of the northern NY counties began competing in the Envirothon. In 1998, the North Adirondack Regional Envirothon was established for Clinton, Essex, Franklin and St. Lawrence Counties. The Envirothon experience is a unique approach to environmental education. Teams compete in an outdoor setting where they learn that cooperation is needed to achieve success. Participation in this competition is fun for both students and their advisors. The activities are designed to help students become environmentally aware, action-oriented adults.

The 2004 North Adirondack Regional Envirothon was organized by the four County Soil and Water Conservation Districts, the New York Power Authority, Paul Smith's College, and Cedar Eden Environmental.

A special thanks to all the teachers and advisors who have taken the time to participate with their students.
