Hardware History: My US Robotics PalmPilot

My old PalmPilotMy OLD/ORIGINAL PalmPilot was a US Robotics labeled PalmPilot Personal with a PalmIII upgrade card. I have outfitted this base system with a PDA Panache "black nail" stylus (lovely weight & feel). My only other additional hardware/peripheral is a PalmNavigator compass module from Precision Navigator. I have long since retired this old beast, but it served me well. Like all old electronics, it is kicking around in a drawer full of cables and retired gadgets. *Former PalmPilot owners should recognize the color scheme of web page
which was coded to resemble the color scheme of the original Palm.
The classic entry screen is reproduced at the bottom.

My new Palm m505 Next came my first color Palm device, the Palm m505. I used the PDA Panache "black nail" stylus with this one too. It would notmfit in the stylus slot of any Palm device, but I put a little slit at the inside top of the binding of the Palm-issued leather case and slipped it right in there.

My new Palm m505My only non-PALM PDA was the Sony Clie PEG-TH55 (runs Palm OS), which I purchased the day before SONY announced it was getting out of the PDA business. But that was OK. I really wanted WiFi and I had tried two Palm Tungsten Cs and they both failed on me -- the first in 6 hours, the second in 6 days. Making the switch from a true PALM device to the CLIE was a little tough: same operating system but still needed to install proprietary SONY version. I used the plain desktop on my desktop and still used Launch 'Em on my PDA. I continued to use the PDA Panache "black nail" as my stylus, but it fit NOWHERE on this device. And no decent case existed to fit the TH55.

My LifeDriveNext I moved to the Palm LifeDrive. I was a little disappointed in the speed of the device, and the constant resets. I finally gave up using the Panache "black nail" styluss. Again, I never found a suitable case, although I tried several.

My new Palm m505I replaced the LifeDrive with a Palm T|X, lured by the WiFi capabilities. I love the big screen and began to read all my books on the device using eReader. If it wasn't for Audible books on my iPod allowing me to listen to books as I traveled about, I would still be reading all my books that way.

My new Palm m505My Palm Treo 650 (Unlocked GSM, Unicel) has to be the ultimate in the evolution of Palm OS devices. Now I can do all the things I did with my T|X without requiring a wireless connection. Plus, with the addition of some software, I can now have my emails pushed right to me whenever and wherever I have a cell signal. The addition of an IMAP server has made my life so much easier. The screen is too small for some things, like reading an ebook for any length of time. I've outfitted my Treo with a Seido Ultra Extended battery and use the Palm leather holster. I recommend that you get a 2 GB SD card and install most of your third-party programs there.

accessories in use with my Palm Treo 650

My Favorite Palm Accessories

Treo 650 • Seidio 3200mAh Ultra Extended Battery ***
This bad boy is the ONLY way to get your active Palm Treo through the day without tethering yourself to the charger. The standard battery only provides 1800mAh and won't last the workday, especially when using IMAP and push-mail technologies. The only drawback is that the battery is so big, it comes with a replacement extended battery cover. See my review on the TreoCentral Forum.
If you just don't want to give up the space (or abandon a skin-tight case, you can also get a Seidio 2400mAh battery that fits within the stock Treo battery cover. Or buy a replacement 1800mAh battery and charger to swap out spares. Me, I'm going with the Ultra Extended battery and no worries.

Treo 650 • Palm Leather Side Case ***
This holster-style "side pouch" case holds the Palm Treo with Ultra Extended Battery • secure in the case and secure on your belt. See my review on the TreoCentral Forum. Sure, it is made by Palm(r), but it is the best for anyone with the UE battery, or, like me, who prefers to NOT cover up the well-crafted Treo with a skin. Remember to cover your touchsreen with a protector and turn on the keyboard lock. If you have an application that "wakes up" your Treo, such as 4cast, you may accidentaly push some buttons. It is a little difficult getting the PDA out when sitting. When standing, removal is easier but the Treo is slippery so be careful. I have also noticed that I somehow keep turning the sound button off when removing the device from the holster.

Palm T|X • Rhinoskin Aluminum Hardcase ***
Whether you say "aluminum" or "Al•you•minium," this is the case to get if you have a Palm T|X. It provides ample protection and slips easily into your front pocket. This case has protected my T|X through numerous falls.

Bejeweled 2

Treo & T|X

****
The legend has returned...and is more wildly addictive than ever before! Bejeweled 2 takes the classic game of gem-swapping to euphoric new heights. Players must match the colored jewels in lines of three horizontally or vertically to clear them from the board. Lines of four jewels are awarded with a Power Gem whilst lines of five award the much sought-after Hyper Cube. Both special jewels trigger their own unique jewel-clearing devices. Bejeweled 2 features all new graphics, stunning background images, in game transitions and cutting-edge special effects. The game has four standard play modes; classic, action, endless and the all-new puzzle mode and five special bonus modes are unlocked as players progress through the various standard modes, adding extra challenges and even more gameplay.
ChattereMail

Treo

***
A nice program for pushing mail to your Treo using an IMAP server (not provided, although I am happy with FuseMail) and a great improvement over Versamail. Unfortunately, the program creator, Marc, just announced his full-time employment with Palm, Inc. and that he won't be providing much in the way of updates or service.

CityTime

T|X

***
The fast and accurate day/night plot shows where it is day and night across the world in real time. Time anywhere in the world can be estimated by referring to the day/night plot. Tapping on the main screen map shows the name and time in the nearest city. Four world clocks on screen give precise information and show the day of the week in remote cities.
Dalek

T|X

***
Classic, fun Apple/Mac Dalek (Dr. Who) game • I played an original of this game on an Apple II. Although I registered my Palm version, I have since lost the information and the sources have vanished from the web. It's simple, but fun in a retro way. The Wikipedia link includes a good description and link to J2ME version for cell phones.
DateBk6

Treo & T|X

***
datebook enhancement adds a wealth of functionality to the palm datebook application., including icons, floating events, and much more
Documents to Go Pro

Treo & T|X

**
View/edit Word/Excel/PowerPoint on your PDA. Works as a document viewer for your email program.
eReader

Treo & T|X

***

eReader Pro for Palm OS is an award-winning application used to read eReader eBooks on your Palm OS handheld. eReader Pro has more features than the free version, including free eBooks, the ability to read dictionaries, autoscrolling and more! I use mostly on T|X to read books and on the Treo to view selected books.

eReader tends to eat of system memory with data files for every book you open. I presume these keep track of where you are, notes made, etc.

FileMan

Treo & T|X

**
My preferred file manager, from BitsnBolts.
FileZ

Treo & T|X

*
Another file manager, FileZ (from nosleep software) is a reliable, full featured file management and system utility. It allows you to view and modify any file on your handheld or external memory card, and much, much, more. A lot of people prefer this program, although I do not like it so much.

HandZipper

Treo & T|X

**
A zip (archive) utility for the Palm OS, allowing you to open or create zip archives. Kind of a clunky implementation (the interface stinks). Can be used to install programs downloaded as ZIP file directlyto PDA

IconMgr

T|X

**
freeware by Christopher Antos; available at PalmGear; Icon Manager lets you create or edit icon sets for use with HandyShopper, DateBk5, DataShield, SplashID, and Agendus. Icon Manager also supports high density icons on Palm OS 5.x devices, Sony Clie devices, and Acer devices.

***
Launcher X adds a tabbed menu system to your device. Most importantly, it allows you to create shortcuts and run applications directly from the SD card. It also includes a bunch of handy built-in utilities.

Mars Needs Cows

Treo & T|X

*

You just HAVE to check out a game called Mars Needs Cows. Difficult puzzles that you must solve, moving the cows through a grid to the spaceship upload site. Try "Easy" first. Great background music.

PalmaryClock

Treo & T|X

**
PalmaryClock is a multifunctional clock of variable design. It can be transformed into either classical, digital or alarm clock, watches or calendar according to your wishes. A great numbers of skins have been developed for PalmaryClock allow you to design the clock according to your likes.

Par 3 Golf

Treo & T|X

**

It is a golf game by Reset Game. Decent graphics and player control. There appears to be a number of these "Par X" games from the same source. In Par 3, all courses are par 3 holes, and so on.

PocketExpress

Treo & T|X

**
Handmark® Pocket Express™ delivers news, weather, sports, stocks, directories, movies, maps, and more to wireless handsets. I find that this program eats up system memory on my Treo over time - the creators say that is normal behavior.

PocketTunes

Treo & T|X

***

PockeTunes allows you to play music on your Treo from many sources (mp3 etc.) The latest version includes a nice internet radio feature
